Background
My broad interests are in learning, technology, and design. My specific interests are in applying cognitive science to the design of learning solutions. This encompasses fields like cognition, computer technology, organizational processes, user-system interaction, design, and learning.
I became intrigued with the potential for computers to support educational goals as an undergraduate at the University of California, San Diego. I was employed as a programmer and statistical consultant for the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services, for whom I had previously served as a tutor. I decided to pursue a specialized degree in Computer-Based Education. Hugh Mehan, the director of the Teacher Education Program, and James Levin, then a researcher in computer education applications with the Laboratory for Comparative Human Cognition, served as my advisors and supervised a project on using electronic message systems for instruction as my senior thesis.
I pursued employment in computer education and joined DesignWare, Inc. as a programmer/analyst, designing and developing educational computer games. I gained experience in the variety of tasks involved in producing such software, while developing software including Micro Discovery (SRA), FaceMaker (Spinnaker), and Spellicopter (DesignWare).
My search for answers to questions about user-system interaction for learning purposes led to the work of Donald Norman and his call for "cognitive engineering". I returned to UCSD, in the Department of Psychology, to study with him. During that time I was a member of the Human-Machine Interaction research group and the subsequent Intelligent Systems Group at UCSD as well as serving in summer positions for NASA and Cubic Corporation. In addition to the use of computers for education, I became interested in the skills utilized by successful problem-solvers and the methods to facilitate the acquisition of those skills.
As I finished my dissertation on analogical skill performance and training, I worked with Kathleen Fisher of the Center for Research on Mathematics and Science Education, analyzing data on the use of SemNet, a computer-based tool for knowledge representation. I subsequently obtained a postdoctoral fellowship at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh, where I conducted research on a computer-based environment for facilitating children's acquisition of science concepts through qualitative reasoning with Robert Glaser; on the effect of verbalizations on cognitive evaluations; and on a computer-based environment on problem-solving skills.
I moved to a position as a Lecturer (and then Senior Lecturer) in the School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of New South Wales. My duties included teaching about user-system interaction and research on computer applications to education. I have been increasingly involved in developing learning environments mediated by technology, with a particular focus on design methods and engagement.
I took a leave of absence from the university to work on two Australian government-sponsored initiatives, to provide me with practical grounding for my work and to acquire some management experience. The first year was with Open Net Pty Ltd, which was established to deliver on-line learning. My major role was as the educational design manager. The second and third years were with the Access Australia Cooperative Multimedia Centre, a collaborative venture between the multimedia industry and educational institutions. My role was to manage design of multimedia that is effective, engaging, and usable. During that time I maintained an adjunct position at the university, continuing to supervise research students and participate in professional activities.
I returned to the US to take up a position with Knowledge Universe Interactive Studios (merged to form KnowledgePlanet). There I led the design and development of an adaptive internet-based learning environment platform, and supported overall initiatives in education and technology.
I currently run Quinnovation, an independent learning and performance consultancy, with a special emphasis on learning experience design and strategy. This allows me the opportunity to provide meaningful solutions, increasing the breadth of my skills and exposure to different business requirements, while refining my theoretical positions. Along the way I’ve worked on mobile, games, performance support, strategy, and more, for corporations, not-for-profits, educational institutions, and government agencies. It has also given me the freedom to publish books, run workshops, and keynote around the world.
Recently, I’ve joined with the Learning Development Accelerator, a society for evidence-based approaches to L&D, helping run the organization and leading LDA Press, a publishing entity. I’m also serving as an advisor to Elevator 9 on learning science criteria.
